Gabriel Manigault papers, 1775-1839.

Papers consist of correspondence, a weather journal, and estate papers. Correspondence (1775-1778) of Gabriel Manigault is with his grandmother Ann Ashby Manigault, John Farquharson, Stead family members, and others from Charleston (S.C.), New York (N.Y.), and Geneva (Switzerland) concerning family matters, Geneva, travels in Europe, Revolutionary War events in New York and Charleston, privateers, and other matters. A letterbook (1776-1777) contains copies of letters from Gabriel Manigault in Geneva (Switzerland) to his grandfather Gabriel Manigault (1704-1781), John Laurens, and others concerning travels in Europe, his education, the Revolutionary War, and other matters. A weather journal (1776-1804) records temperature and other weather conditions at Geneva (Switzerland) for 1776, at Charleston (S.C.) for 1784 to 1792, and at New York (N.Y) for 1793 to 1804. There are also notes regarding coins used in Geneva and mountain heights in Switzerland, and newspaper clippings about weather. Estate papers (1817-1839) for the estates of Gabriel Manigault (1758-1809) and his wife Margaret Izard Manigault (1768-1824) consist of accounts, letters, and legal documents concerning estate settlement and disputes. Included are estate papers (1839) pertaining to the Timmons family.

Margart Izard Manigault was the daughter of Ralph Izard of Charleston, S.C., and Alice de Lancey of New York. Because of her family's wealth and status, she spent much of her youth in France, where she was educated. She married Gabriel Manigault, a Charleston planter, in 1785, and had twelve children, most of whom predeceased her.
